Werfen wir einen Blick zurück in die Vergangenheit der jungen Wilden, die mit ihren naked Bikes über die Landstraßen jagten. Einfache Bikes ohne Zweifel und ohne den ganzen elektronischen Schnickschnack, der uns heute auf unseren Touren begleitet. Freier und gleichzeitig ungezügelter als heute könnte man meinen und genau in diese Kerbe will Arai mit dem Concept XE schlagen. Ein Retro-Helm, kantig und aufregend wie die 70er und 80er Jahre, aber mit der Sicherheit von heute.
Der Arai Concept XE
Schon beim ersten Kontakt mit dem Helm stellt man fest, dass neben der Einfachheit vor allem die Qualität stimmt. Das Antimicrobial- genannte Innenfutter ist sehr angenehm auf der Haut zu tragen. Austauschbare Ohren- und Wangenpolster, Lautsprechertaschen, das Facial Contour System (FCS) und herausnehmbare Schläfenpolster runden das Innenleben des Helmes ab. Dabei überzeugt er durch seinen Tragekomfort und wird auch bei längeren Touren mit 1550 Gramm nicht zu schwer auf dem Kopf.
Gleichzeitig wird dieser unterwegs bei Bedarf mit reichlich Frischluft versorgt, die im Kinnbereich über sechs durch Gitter geschützte und verschließbare Belüftungsöffnungen in den Helm geleitet wird. Ergänzt wird das System am Visier durch je eine Belüftungsöffnung rechts und links, die den oberen Kopfbereich kühlen. Damit geht Arai einen besonderen ja zugleich eigenständigen Weg in Sachen Sicherheit und Belüftung, denn sie greifen nicht mit Bohrungen in die Helmschale ein, sondern nutzen ihr Free Flow System (FFS) mit einem verborgenen und zugleich mehrstufigen Luftkanal im Inneren des Helmes.
Sicherheit
Die Sicherheit spielt grundsätzlich eine sehr große Rolle, denn sie ist die Kernphilosophie der Marke Arai. Aus diesem Grund produziert Arai auch rundere, glattere und stärkere Außenschalen, um die Gleitleistung bei einem Aufprall zu verbessern und die in den Helm übertragene Aufprallenergie zu reduzieren. Und sollte es doch einmal zu einem Unfall kommen, helfen die Emergency Release Tabs an der linken und rechten Helmvorderkante, den Helm sicher vom Kopf zu nehmen, ohne weitere Verletzungen zu verursachen. Aufgrund dieser Features und der hohen Verarbeitungsqualität ist der Concept-XE natürlich auch ECE R22-06 geprüft, „weil er, so Arai eben natürlich ein Arai Helm ist“. Zu guter Letzt rundet der Doppel-D-Verschluss das Sicherheitssystem des Helmes ab. Alles recht einfach wenn man es so betrachtet.
Die Visiermechanik hingegen ist etwas komplizierter und die Befestigungsschrauben wirken im Gegensatz zum Rest des Helmes eher billig. Aber auch hier steckt eine Sicherheitstaktik dahinter. Das mit einem Pinlock ausgestattete Visiersystem VAS-VC ist direkt in die Schalenstruktur des Helms integriert und optimiert so die Sicherheit der Schale und gleichzeitig die Sichtleistung des Fahrers, indem der Drehpunkt des Visiers abgesenkt wird. Außerdem brechen die Kunststoffschrauben im schlimmsten Fall schneller als Metallschrauben und das Visier lässt sich bei Bedarf nach einem Unfall leichter und ohne höhere Gewalt entfernen.
Fazit
Auf der Straße macht der Helm eine gute Figur und unterstreicht diese durch sein markantes Design und die verschiedenen Farbvarianten. Der Tragekomfort ist sehr gut und die Lautstärke natürlich immer abhängig vom Motorrad, der Sitzposition und dem eigenen Empfinden. Man kommt also um einen Selbstversuch nicht herum.
Für uns hat der Arai Concept-XE im Test gehalten, was der Hersteller auf seiner Homepage verspricht und so bringt er ein Stück längst verlorene Wildheit für rund 520,00 Euro Kaufpreis auf die Straßen der Gegenwart zurück.

ARAI CONCEPT-XE Retro Helmet
Let’s take a look back at the past of the young savages who roamed the country roads on their naked bikes. Simple bikes without a doubt and without all the electronic bells and whistles that accompany us on our tours today. Freer and at the same time more unbridled than today, one might think, and this is precisely the direction Arai wants to take with the Concept XE. A retro helmet, edgy and exciting like the 70s and 80s, but with the safety of today.
The Arai Concept XE
As soon as you touch the helmet for the first time, you realise that, in addition to its simplicity, the quality is just right. The antimicrobial lining is very comfortable to wear against the skin. Replaceable ear and cheek pads, speaker pockets, the Facial Contour System (FCS) and removable temple pads round off the helmet’s inner workings. At 1550 grams, it is comfortable to wear and does not weigh too much on the head, even on longer tours.
At the same time, it is supplied with plenty of fresh air when needed, which is channelled into the helmet via six ventilation openings in the chin area that are protected by grilles and can be closed. The system on the visor is supplemented by one ventilation opening on the right and one on the left to cool the upper part of the head. Arai is thus taking a unique and independent approach to safety and ventilation, as they do not interfere with the design of the visor. At 1550 grams, it is comfortable to wear and not too heavy on the head, even on longer tours.
At the same time, the helmet is supplied with plenty of fresh air when needed, which is channelled into the chin area via six ventilation openings that are protected by grilles and can be closed. The system on the visor is supplemented by one ventilation opening each on the right and left to cool the upper part of the head. Arai is thus taking a unique and independent approach to safety and ventilation, as it does not use holes in the helmet shell, but utilises its Free Flow System (FFS) with a concealed and multi-stage air channel inside the helmet.
Safety
Safety always plays a very important role, as it is the core philosophy of the Arai brand. For this reason, Arai also produces rounder, smoother and stronger outer shells to improve sliding performance in the event of an impact and reduce the impact energy transferred into the helmet. And should an accident occur, the emergency release tabs on the left and right front edge of the helmet help to safely remove the helmet from the head without causing further injury. Due to these features and the high quality of workmanship, the Concept-XE is of course also ECE R22-06 approved, „because, according to Arai, it is of course an Arai helmet“. Last but not least, the double-D fastener rounds off the helmet’s safety system. All quite simple when you look at it that way.
The visor mechanism, on the other hand, is a little more complicated and the fastening screws look rather cheap in contrast to the rest of the helmet. But here, too, there are safety tactics behind it. The VAS-VC visor system, equipped with a pinlock, is integrated directly into the shell structure of the helmet and thus optimises the safety of the shell and at the same time the rider’s visual performance by lowering the pivot point of the visor. In addition, the plastic screws break more quickly than metal screws in the worst-case scenario and the visor can be removed more easily and without force majeure after an accident if necessary.
Conclusion
The helmet cuts a fine figure on the road and underlines this with its striking design and the different colour variants. It is very comfortable to wear and the volume is of course always dependent on the motorbike, the riding position and how you feel. So there’s no getting round trying it out for yourself.
In our test, the Arai Concept-XE delivered what the manufacturer promises on its website, bringing a piece of long-lost wildness back to the streets of the present for a purchase price of around 520.00 euros.
