Eine Woche Urlaub geht viel zu schnell vorüber. Kaum ist man in den Bergen angekommen, hat großartige Pässe erlebt und die spätsommerlichen Tage ausgenutzt, sitz man auf dem Motorrad und ist wieder auf dem Weg nach Hause. Doch dieses Mal liegt noch ein wahres Highlight der Dolomiten auf unserem Heimweg, denn wir scheuen an diesem Freitag sowohl den Rückweg über den Fernpass wie auch die Fahrt über Garmisch Patenkirchen. Im Fokus der Tour liegt das Timmelsjoch, dass mit seinen 2474 Metern Höhe jede Menge sensationelle Ausblicke zu bieten hat.
Von Bozen aus geht es daher erst einmal gen Norden, vorbei an den wunderschönen Gärten des Trautmannsdorfs in Meran und hoch ins Passeirertal, wo schon die Anfahrt zur Passstraße ein landschaftliches Erlebnis darstellt. Der Verkehr ist mäßig und lässt uns zügig vorankommen. Und dann mit einem Mal sehen wir die heimliche Lücke zwischen dem Passeirer- und dem Ötztal direkt vor uns. Wie es wohl den Steinzeitmenschen ergangen ist als sie diese Verbindungsachse mit ihren teils spektakulären Ausblicken bewandert sind? Die Geschichte des Passes geht jedenfalls zeitlich sehr weit zurück. Uns zieht die Straße komplett in ihren Bann und Kurve um Kurve steigen wir den Berg hinauf. Auf rund 30 Kilometern länge bietet die Passstraße gut asphaltierte 44 Kehren, die bei den heutigen Wetterbedingungen gleich noch mal so viel Freude bereiten. Die Sonne scheint, Hartmut und ich haben Spaß und kommen entspannt nach dem langen Tunnel am Adler an. Kein Auto und kein Motorrad, der normalerweise überfüllte Parkplatz gehört uns ganz alleine und so nutze ich die Zeit für ein paar spektakuläre Fotos vom Adler und der Szenerie.
Auf der Tafel unterm Adler steht „Was Freundschaft verbindet, kann Politik nicht trennen“. Genauso sehe wir das auch und machen uns nach dieser kurzen Pause auf den Weg zur Mautstation. Die Preise sind für einen sonnigen Tag dort oben noch in Ordnung. Für die reine Überfahrt allerdings sind 15 Euro pro Bike unserer Meinung nach schon eine Hausnummer. Aber wir beklagen uns nicht, denn wir wollten es ja so und hatten uns im Vorhinein bereits über die Preise erkundigt. Leider haben wir weder für die sechs Erlebnisstationen noch für das wieder aufgebaute Motorradmuseum heute Zeit möchten aber erwähnen, dass sich sowohl das Museum wie auch die Erkundung der Stationen wirklich lohnen.
Nach der Mautstation nehmen wir etwas reumütig die kurvenreiche Straße hinunter ins Tal. Vorbei an den saftig grünen Almwiesen und Alpenrosenhängen bei Hochgurgl weg vom kargen, doch zugleich faszinierenden hochalpinen Gelände, wo selbst im Sommer noch hin und wieder so manches Schneefeld die Fahrbahn säumt, Schafe, Ziegen und sogar ab und zu Steinböcke den Weg zur Passhöhe kreuzen. Wie die meisten Passstraßen dieser Gegend ist die Timmelsjoch Straße nur in den Sommermonaten befahrbar, meist ab Ende Mai bis Oktober. Häufig beginnen bereits im April die aufwändigen Schneeräumarbeiten, bei denen teils Schneehöhen bis zu zehn Metern beseitigt werden müssen. Wer das glück hat einer der Ersten im Jahr zu sein der dort entlangfährt bekommt also zusätzlich noch eine Dosis Adrenalin.

Unterkünfte gibt auf beiden Seiten der Passstraße reichlich und nach jedwedem Gusto. Uns zieht es allerdings meist auf die italienische Seite der Pasta wegen 😊.
Wie überall mittlerweile überschlägt sich in den Stoßzeiten aber auch hier der Verkehr. Wir hatten Glück an unserer Heimreise, aber wie am Stilfser Joch habe, ich dort schon ganz andere Szenen erleben können.
Respekt sollte man, auch wenn es manchmal schwerfällt den anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern entgegenbringen. Und wenn nicht ihnen dann sollte man es der Natur wegen tun denn sie ist fantastisch. Umso mehr Freude am Fahren hat man durch diese berauschende Bergwelt.

Passepartout the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road (English Version Below) Coordinates 46° 54′ 19″ N, 11° 5′ 51″ E
A week’s holiday goes by far too quickly. No sooner have you arrived in the mountains, experienced great passes and made the most of the late summer days than you’re on your motorbike and on your way home again. But this time there is a real highlight of the Dolomites on our way home, because on this Friday we shun both the way back over the Fernpass and the ride via Garmisch Patenkirchen. The focus of the tour is the Timmelsjoch, which with its 2474 metres altitude has a lot of sensational views to offer.
From Bolzano, the route first heads north, past the beautiful gardens of Trautmannsdorf in Merano and up into the Passeier Valley, where even the approach to the pass road is a scenic experience. The traffic is moderate and allows us to make rapid progress. And then all of a sudden we see the secret gap between the Passeirer and Ötz valleys directly in front of us. I wonder how the Stone Age people fared when they walked along this connecting axis with its sometimes spectacular views. In any case, the history of the pass goes back a long way. We are completely captivated by the road and climb up the mountain, curve after curve. Over a distance of about 30 kilometres, the pass road offers 44 well-surfaced hairpin bends, which are even more enjoyable in today’s weather conditions. The sun is shining, Hartmut and I are having fun and arrive relaxed at the Adler after the long tunnel. No cars and no motorbikes, the normally overcrowded car park is all ours and so I use the time to take a few spectacular photos of the Adler and the scenery.
The plaque under the eagle reads „What friendship unites, politics cannot divide“. That’s exactly how we see it and after this short break we make our way to the toll station. The prices are still okay for a sunny day up there. For the mere crossing, however, 15 euros per bike is a bit steep in our opinion. But we’re not complaining, because that’s what we wanted and we had already enquired about the prices in advance. Unfortunately, we don’t have time for either the six adventure stations or the rebuilt motorbike museum today, but we would like to mention that both the museum and the exploration of the stations are really worthwhile.
After the toll station, we somewhat ruefully take the winding road down into the valley. Past the lush green alpine meadows and alpine rose slopes at Hochgurgl, away from the barren yet fascinating high alpine terrain, where even in summer many a snowfield still lines the roadway from time to time, sheep, goats and even the occasional ibex cross the path to the pass summit. Like most of the pass roads in this area, the Timmelsjoch road is only passable in the summer months, usually from the end of May until October. Often, the time-consuming snow-clearing work begins as early as April, during which snow heights of up to ten metres have to be removed in some cases. If you are lucky enough to be one of the first to drive along this road, you will also get a dose of adrenalin.

There is plenty of accommodation on both sides of the pass to suit all tastes. However, we are usually drawn to the Italian side for the pasta 😊.
As is the case everywhere nowadays, the traffic also overruns here at peak times. We were lucky on our journey home, but like at the Stelvio Pass, I have experienced quite different scenes there.
Respect should be shown to other road users, even if it is sometimes difficult. And if not for them, then for nature’s sake, because it is fantastic. This exhilarating mountain world makes driving all the more enjoyable.
