Ursprünglich als Hersteller in der Vergangenheit auf die Fighter und Stuntszene ausgerichtet hat Icon aus Portland in Oregon in den letzten Jahren seine Produktpalette und sein Image stark erweitert. Bezieht sie die modern designte Bekleidungslinie noch eher auf Sportbikes den Cruiser und schnell wachsenden Retrobereich, sind die Helme sehr eigenständig im Design (siehe Airflite) und zudem noch außergewöhnlich sicher konstruiert. Denn außer der Europäischen Normung erfüllen sie auch noch die höheren amerikanischen Sicherheitsstandards. Das gilt auch für den Airframe Pro Carbon der sich zudem noch mit 1500 Gramm angenehm tragen lässt.

Insgesamt umfasst die Airframe Familie dabei mit Glasfaser-Verbundschalen Helme mit elf verschiedenen Grafikoptionen, die preislich zwischen 350,00 und 440,00 Euro liegen. Der Airframe Pro Carbon ist jedoch ein wenig teurer und die Preise im Netz beginnen bei um die 500,00 Euro, Coolenessfaktor inklusive.

Icon Airframe Pro Carbon Ausstattung

Zur Ausstattung des auf maximale Belastung ausgelegten und aus handlaminierten 4Tress-Carbongewede gefertigten Helmes gehören unter anderem diverse Belüftungen. Gerade am Kopf, im seitlichen Frontbereich funktionieren diese ausgezeichnet und werden von der Kinn- und Frontbelüftung an der Stirn noch ergänzt. Die Bedienung mit leichten und mittleren Handschuhen ist dabei problemlos, mit Winterhandschuhen wird es unter Umständen aber etwas fummeliger. Doch haben die meisten Fahrer in dieser Jahreszeit die Lüftungen eh oft geschlossen. Neben dem goldenen Visier gibt es natürlich noch andere Visiervarianten, wobei keine davon bisher Pin Lock fähig ist. Durch den Schnellwechselmechanismus sind die RST-TracShield genannten Visiere zudem flott getauscht und da es sich um einen sportlichen Helm handelt, hat man auf eine Sonnenblende und das zusätzliche Gewicht gar verzichtet. Die Rastungen (sechs Stufen) funktionieren knackig und wenn das Visier unten eingerastet ist, benötigt man durchaus auch mal einen zweiten Versuch, um es wieder aufzubekommen. Zu guter Letzt sei noch erwähnt, dass die gespiegelten Visiere zwar immer sehr cool aussehen, aber leider bei verschiedenen Lichtverhältnissen auch nach innen spiegeln, was zuweilen etwas stören kann.

Gar nicht störend hingegen ist das HydraDry genannte Innenfutter, das natürlich herausnehmbar sowie waschbar ist. Weiters ist es feuchtigkeitsableitend und hat einen sehr guten Tragekomfort. Und auch Brillenträger kommen hierbei nicht zu kurz denn es ist genügend Platz vorhanden. Die Öffnung ist typisch für Icon schmal gehalten, hat allerdings den Vorteil das das Futter sauber am Hals abschließt und zudem noch eine stützenden Funktion übernimmt. Verschlossen wird der Airframe Carbon mit einem soliden mit Aluminiumlaschen ausgestatteten Doppel D Verschluss, das passt sehr gut zum sportlichen Style des Helmes.

Ob bei kurzen oder auch längeren Touren das Gewicht ist eine überzeugender Aspekt für den Icon, denn die 1500 Gramm sind ausgezeichnet ausbalanciert. So entsteht in Verbindung mit dem Innenfutter ein überzeugender Tragekomfort. Während der verschiedenen Testfahrten mit unterschiedlichen zumeist nackten Maschinen konnte der Airframe zusätzlich mit einer guten Geräuschkulisse überzeugen und eben auch mit der weiter oben im Text schon erwähnten Belüftung. Maschinen mit Verkleidungen sind hier natürlich immer eine besondere Herausforderung, da Verkleidungsscheiben und Verkleidungsteile die Luftströme beeinflussen und sich so ein ganz anderes Bild ergeben kann. Hier hilft tatsächlich nur eins, selbst Probefahren und testen.

Fazit

Der Icon Airframe Pro Carbon ist ein ausgereifter, sportlicher Helm der aber auch gerne auf einem Tourenkopf seinen Platz findet. Dabei ist er komfortabel und bietet auch Brillenträgern genügend Freiheiten für die Bügel der Brillen, ohne zu drücken. Nachteile hingegen gibt es aus unserer Sicht nur ganz wenige. Dazu gehört die etwas fummelige Bedienung der kleinen Belüftungsverschlüsse und das manchmal etwas hakelige Visier, wenn es eingerastet ist. Ansonsten bekommt man für rund 500,00 Euro feines Carbon, hohe Sicherheitsstandards und die Größen XS bis 3XL verbunden mit einem coolen Look. Helmet Test: Icon Airframe Pro Carbon Bad Ass on the Head

Originally a Manufacture geared towards the fighter and stunt scene, Icon from Portland, Oregon, has greatly expanded its product range and image in recent years. While the modern design of the clothing line is more geared towards sports bikes, cruisers and the fast-growing retro sector, the helmets have a very unique design (see Airflite) and are also exceptionally safe. In addition to European standards, they also meet American safety standards. This also applies to the Airframe Pro Carbon, which is also comfortable to wear at 1500 grams.

All in all, the Airframe family with glass-fibre composite shells comprises eleven different graphic options, which are priced between 350.00 and 440.00 euros. The Airframe Pro Carbon, however, is a little more expensive and prices on the net start at around 500.00 Euros, coolness factor integrated.

The features of the helmet, which is designed for maximum load and made of hand-laminated 4Tress carbon fabric, include various vents. These work excellently, especially on the head and in the side front area, and are perfectly complemented by the chin and front ventilation on the forehead. The operation with light and medium gloves is problem-free, but with winter gloves it can be a little more fiddly. But most riders usually have the vents closed at this time of year anyway. Besides the golden visor, there are of course other visor variants, although none of them is yet pin lock capable. Thanks to the quick-change mechanism, the visors, called RST-Trac Shield, can be quickly replaced, and since this is a sporty helmet, there is no sun visor. The latches (6 levels) work crisply and when the visor is locked in place at the bottom, you may need a second try to get it open again. Last but not least, it should be mentioned that the mirrored visors always look very cool, but unfortunately also reflect inwards in different light conditions, which can be a bit annoying at times.

The HydraDry lining, on the other hand, is not annoying at all, and is of course removable and washable. It also wicks away moisture and is very comfortable to wear. And spectacle wearers don’t miss out either, because there is enough space. The opening is typically narrow for Icon, but has the advantage that the lining closes neatly around the neck and also has a supporting function. The Airframe Carbon is closed with a solid double D closure equipped with aluminium straps, which suits the sporty style of the helmet very well.

Whether for short or longer tours, the weight is a convincing aspect for the Icon, because the 1500 grams are excellently balanced. This, in combination with the inner lining, creates a convincing wearing comfort. During the various test rides with different, mostly naked machines, the Airframe was also able to convince with a good noise level and also with the ventilation already mentioned above. Machines with fairings are of course always a special challenge, as fairing windows and fairing parts influence the airflow, which can result in a completely different picture. The only thing that really helps here is to test ride the bike yourself.

Conclusion

The Icon Airframe Pro Carbon is a well-engineered, sporty helmet that can also be worn on a touring head. It is comfortable and also offers spectacle wearers enough freedom for the temples of their glasses without squeezing. On the other hand, there are only a few disadvantages from our point of view. These include the somewhat fiddly operation of the small ventilation fasteners and the visor, which can sometimes be a little stiff when it is locked in place. Otherwise, for around 500.00 euros, you get fine carbon, high safety standards and sizes XS to 3XL combined with a cool look. It is available online and at Parts Europe dealers.
